Mr. Vale's Math Class: The Formula for Funky, Fresh Fun

Typically, I start every interview by asking artists to give me a 15- to 30-second overview of their music. An elevator pitch, if you will.

When I sat down with Jordan Vale of Mr. Vale's Math Class, his answer immediately stood out. After listening to the band's music, talking with Jordan, and learning more about their journey, it couldn't have been more fitting.

"We're like if Vulfpeck and Talking Heads bonded over their love of math."

It's a description that's quirky and unexpected, but actually makes a whole lot of sense.

Mr. Vale's Math Class is a six-piece pop-funk band from Portland, Oregon. And despite the name, you don't need to dust off your middle school algebra skills before pressing play. The band blends a the funky grooves, engaging songwriting, and a killer stage presence into a live experience that'll leave you wanting more. 

At the center of the band is Jordan Vale, whose keys, trumpet, and vocals lead a lineup of accomplished musicians including Nick Hamel (guitar), Milo Fultz (bass), James Ford (drums), David Burrows (auxiliary percussion), and Lhanna Writesal (saxophone).

"I like using the theme of math because everyone can relate to it. It elicits emotions inside of us." Jordan explains. "It's maybe cooler when someone's like, 'I hate math. I like your songs…because I kind of like making them deal with that."

Math madness aside, the group has spent the better part of the last eight years creating energetic, interactive performances that are equal parts dance party, comedy, and community gathering. While their name may spark curiosity, their mission is simple: make people smile.

"I hope they just walk away feeling happier," he noted.

That philosophy has become the foundation of everything Mr. Vale's Math Class does, from inviting audience members into the performance to writing songs on the spot with crowds. The band knows how to turn each and every show into a unique, shared experience. When you see them live, you’ll likely have something to remember. 

"We'll pass out percussion instruments, sometimes we'll make a song with the audience," he explained. "And sometimes I'm a little worried that I'm too split between trying to throw a dance party and having an interactive experience – but you can do both, I think."

That spontaneity has led to some unforgettable moments.

One of the band's favorite recent memories came while playing a festival hosted inside a former coastal high school that has since been transformed into an art space. The event recreated the feeling of attending school, complete with themed classes and communal meals, making it the perfect setting for Mr. Vale's Math Class's playful personality.

During their set, audience members suggested a handful of random prompts—including math, high school, and rabbits—which the band transformed into a completely original song. Before long, a simple lyric of "Bunny, bunny, hop hop" evolved into an entire crowd hopping in unison.

"It was just this very serendipitous moment," he recalled. "Everyone was having fun and leaning in, and it was really what it's about."

Beneath the clever branding and math references is a band committed to creating genuine moments of joy and connection. Their shows are lively, unpredictable, and impossible to experience from the sidelines for long. The way they interact on stage, with audiences, and with the music, brings a refreshing vibrance to the Pacific Northwest that is much needed. 

If you had to solve for Mr. Vale's Math Class, the equation might look something like this:
