This week, Mon Rovîa introduced his Bloodline tour to Denver, Colorado. And without a doubt, it was one of the most deeply intimate performances. Janjay Lowe, who goes by Mon Rovîa as homage to his birthplace, created his album Bloodline with the messages of his heritage, hope, grief, and holding onto love in the face of fear.

Mon Rovîa’s album is reflective of his identity and is the story of the most profound experiences; his memories of the war in Liberia are scattered across the album’s songs, as well as his experiences of growing up in America after being adopted by an American family. Lowe does an exceptional job expressing his grief and his past through these songs, with commentary in-concert of peace and solidarity, love and empathy for each other, and resistance against oppression.

Lowe presents his messages with such clarity of who he is and what he’s been through, and successfully transforms it into something digestible for everyone. Subtle comments of reignited hope were whispered across the crowd during his commentary between songs, which were gently silenced as he’d begin the next song.

Mon Rovîa’s music is instrumentally calm and warm, although senses of heartache resonate through every song. Mon will be finishing out his US tour with openers Sydney Rose and Sarah Julia November 11th before traveling to Europe in support of Noah Kahan. If you need a sign for hope and that there’s still good in this world, this is where you’ll find it.
