A Spokane band is making waves nationally while helping elevate the city’s next generation of artists
For years, Fate Defined has been grinding behind the scenes: rehearsing in garages, driving hours for short sets, and pouring everything they have into building a name for themselves in the Pacific Northwest metal scene.
They’re a band that truly loves what they do and has the drive to get to where they want to be.

But what makes Fate Defined stand out in the PNW music community isn’t just their standout performances across the region — and they stand out — but the heart they put into their performances, music, and the things that keep them going every day.
This summer, the band is taking the metal scene by storm.
After taking first place in the Pacific Northwest regional rounds of the Wacken Metal Battle USA competition, the Spokane-based band is heading to the national finals in San Diego, where they’ll compete for the chance to perform at Wacken Open Air in Germany — one of the largest and most prestigious metal festivals in the world.
For the band, the moment still feels surreal.

The road to the finals hasn’t come easily. The band described long drives, last-minute set changes, and years of playing shows with little guarantee of what would come next. Going into the Portland regional final, expectations were intentionally kept low.
Following the set, the members looked at each other with a realization: it may have been the best performance they had ever played.
“One thing the judges critique heavily is stage performance because, ultimately, the goal is playing in front of one of the biggest metal crowds in the world. Before the set, I told everyone to carry themselves with confidence and attitude on stage.
Then we heard people chanting ‘Fate Defined’ while we were walking out. That doesn’t happen often in Spokane. Once we heard that energy from the crowd, we just locked in and had fun.”
That live intensity has become one of the defining elements of Fate Defined’s identity. While many bands stick closely to a single genre, Fate Defined thrives on blending styles, pulling from thrash, traditional heavy metal, melodic influences, and modern metal elements to create something dynamic and unpredictable.
“A lot of bands stay in one lane stylistically, but we move between genres. Some songs are straight thrash, some are traditional heavy metal, and some blend styles together. The judges actually commented on that. They liked hearing dynamics instead of the same sound over and over.
All five of us bring different influences into the room, and the result is music that doesn’t fit neatly into one category. We’re not trying to create something generic. We’re just trying to make music that sounds exciting to us.”

The judges took notice of that versatility, specifically highlighting the band’s shifting dynamics and ability to balance technicality with crowd engagement. Combined with high-energy performances and strong stage presence, the band’s ability to connect with audiences has become a major factor in their rise.
With the nerves and pressure that come with performing on a stage this big, Fate Defined is taking it all in and diving headfirst. They’re on a mission to bring this project front and center.
“We’re a band that deserves to not be in the garage anymore.
This San Diego opportunity is huge no matter what happens. If we win, we go to Germany and have the experience of a lifetime. If we don’t, we still get in front of promoters, journalists, and new audiences. Either way, it’s a win.”
More Than Just the Music
Beyond the national spotlight, Fate Defined’s mission extends further than themselves. Throughout the interview, the band repeatedly emphasized their desire to help build and strengthen Spokane’s local music scene.

That passion is especially evident through their evolution of Metal Mayhem, a local showcase hosted by the group focused on giving regional bands larger opportunities and bringing together Spokane and North Idaho’s growing heavy music community.
We had the opportunity to attend last year, and can attest to the sense of community and belonging the event brings. It is an event that hones in on what makes Spokane and the PNW so unique within its music scene.
“We’re trying to foster a scene where bands work together instead of competing against each other,” the band shared.
“There’s no shortage of success. There’s no reason for gatekeeping.”
The members pointed to legendary regional music movements — from Seattle grunge to Bay Area thrash — as proof that thriving scenes are built through collaboration and community support.
“Why can’t Spokane become something great too?” one member asked.

That mindset has already begun shaping younger musicians in the area. Fate Defined highlighted the importance of helping younger bands get opportunities to perform on larger stages, including local acts like Dissonance and students involved in Spokane music education programs.
“I’ve had students come up to me excited that we played the Knitting Factory,” one member said.
“Seeing that excitement and realizing younger musicians are paying attention — that feels really meaningful.”
Now, as the band prepares for San Diego, they’re doing so with confidence, momentum, and a growing sense that Spokane is beginning to make noise on a much larger scale, proof that their mission is working.
“This is happening all over the world,” the band said of the competition. “There are thousands of bands trying to get this opportunity. To represent Spokane on that level is incredible.”

And regardless of the outcome, the band already sees the experience as a victory.
And while the Wacken finals are currently front and center, Fate Defined future extends far beyond one competition. Fate Defined is already preparing to record a full-length album featuring new material, music they hope will continue pushing the boundaries of their sound while representing Spokane on a larger stage.
“We’re hungry,” the band said. “We want to light a fire under the Pacific Northwest.”
More than anything, though, Fate Defined wants people to remember where they came from.
“I want people to hear about our band and immediately think about Spokane. We want to represent this city well.”
Fate Defined takes the national stage at the USA Wacken Metal Battle 2026 finals on June 13 in San Diego, California, followed by a hometown lineup at Metal Mayhem in Spokane on June 19.
